Benefits of Turkey Tail Mushrooms

The turkey tail mushroom, also known as Yun Zhi in Chinese medicine or roof tile fungus in Japanese, is a medicinal fungus found growing on dead logs.


Its name comes from the tan and brown rings seen on the mushroom that resembles the tail feathers of a turkey. While this mushroom is most prevalent in North America, Europe, and Asia, China and Japan in particular have used the turkey tail mushrooms as a medicinal anecdote for years.



Cancer adjunct treatment


The turkey tail mushroom is made up of polysaccharides. The polysaccharide- K and the polysaccharopeptide, in particular, have been used in China and Japan as an adjunct treatment for cancer.


Polysaccharide-K is actually an approved cancer treatment in Japan. The effect of turkey tail mushroom on cancer has been most extensively studied in treating gastric, breast, lung, and colorectal cancers. Evidence shows these two polysaccharides may inhibit the growth of cancer cells.


Increase Gut Health


Turkey tail mushrooms are a good source of fiber and may contain a natural source of prebiotics from the polysaccharopeptide it contains. The turkey tail mushroom also regulates the healthy bacteria found in your gut which increases your overall health by default.


A properly functioning digestive system lends itself to a strong immune system, balanced mood, healthy sleep patterns, and improved heart and brain health.



Acts as an Anti inflammatory


Turkey tail mushrooms are full of antioxidants that slow down cell damage and help cells recover. These antioxidants increase the anti-inflammatory properties of this fungus.


Promising Antiviral Potential


Several studies have found that the turkey tail mushroom is a very potent antiviral agent as well. It has shown success in treating HIV as well as Covid-19.


One study showed that turkey tail was helpful in improving the human papillomavirus (HPV) with 88% of patients showing improvement in their virus. Not only does turkey tail target and attack cells containing viruses, the mycelium of the turkey tail also secretes anti viral compounds.


With such proven success at treating various ailments, the turkey tail mushroom is finding a permanent place in the medicine cabinet of people all over the globe.
